Another theory comes from the use of tar and pitch was used in the North Carolina naval stores for painting the bottom of ships in an effort to prevent damage to the hulls by shipworms. Legend has it that the name started around the Civil War when Confederates allegedly “stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels”. Although the history of this nickname is not clear, it was once held in negative regard by the state’s inhabitants.
